Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
