Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using these drugs must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
